CABI News

CABI has published a new book which explores how realising the potential of sustainable tourism could revolutionise the way we travel in a bid to both transform people’s lives and the environment.

Jeremy Smith’s book ‘Transforming Travel: Realising the potential of sustainable tourism’ presents an urgent argument for transforming tourism while at the same time promoting tolerance, restoring communities and regenerating habitats.

The 128-page paperback book, released as the UN designated 2017 as ‘International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development’, also provides a vital guide for anyone looking to develop sustainable tourism enterprises as well as the destinations needed to do so.

‘The book explores how to weave together both interpretations,’Jeremy explains. ‘What model should tourism follow to positively transform people’s lives and the environment? And how should we communicate this to tourists looking for transformative experiences?’

‘Transforming Travel’ combines stories from leading companies, interviews with pioneers and thinkers, along with thorough analysis of the industry’s potential to make lasting, positive change.

It provides a presentation of the latest research and statistics on the positive impacts and potential of transformative, sustainable tourism amidst the challenges posed by the need to reduce the impact on climate change.

Claire Parfitt, Senior Commissioning Editor at CABI, said, ‘Written in a highly engaging style, Transforming Travel presents an urgent argument for transforming tourism suitable for tourism practitioners, students, destination managers and policy makers.

‘The book offers a positive and realistic vision of the scope of tourism to promote sustainable development at a time when travel and interaction with foreign cultures is facing numerous existential challenges.

‘Through a unique collection of case studies and stories of the most successful, inspirational, impactful and innovative travel businesses in the world, the author raises a number of thought-provoking questions including what role guests have to play in reducing carbon emissions as well as how global warming will change tourism.’
