The 403rd meeting of CABI’s Executive Council convened last week following approval by the organisation’s 49 Member Countries of a new Medium-Term Strategy focused on some of humanity’s greatest challenges.

Speaking at the meeting, CABI’s CEO Dr Daniel Elger thanked Member Countries for their role in developing and approving CABI’s 2023-2025 Strategy and looked forward to working with Members to implement the plans. These are based around five goals that address poverty, hunger, climate change, gender inequality and loss of biodiversity.

The Executive Council approved CABI’s budget for 2023 and financial plan for 2024-2025, which are critical to delivery of the new Medium-Term Strategy.

Welcoming representatives from many of CABI’s Member Countries, Dr Lutz-Peter Berg, Chair of Executive Council, noted that good progress had been made on CABI’s International Development and Knowledge Management activities during 2022, with growth in the organisation’s programme activity around the world and the launch of the CABI Digital Library, a new, greatly improved and unified platform for CABI’s publishing and information resources.

In a recap of 2022 achievements, Dr Elger highlighted advances in the global CABI-led programme PlantwisePlus, launched in 2021 to help support countries to predict, prepare themselves for and prevent plant health threats in a changing climate.

Dr Elger and the Executive Council thanked Dr Berg for his many years of dedication to the role of Chair before it was agreed that His Excellency Mr Vishnu Dhanpaul, High Commissioner in London for the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago, will now take up the position.

Member Countries also elected Dr Eliud Kireger, Director General/CEO of the Kenya Agricultural & Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) and Mr Colin Barker, Counsellor (Commercial) at the Canadian High Commission in London to serve as Observers on CABI’s Board for the next year.
