CABI News

We are pleased to announce the launch of an Evidence Synthesis Skills Framework. It is designed to help people and organizations develop and embed a common language around evidence synthesis skills. Policy and practice are increasingly framed by evidence synthesis, so training in related best practices is key to strengthening capacity and supporting existing research networks.

The Evidence Synthesis Skills Framework sets out the skills needed across the range of job roles within evidence synthesis teams. It is aimed at researchers, students, librarians and information specialists. It is also intended for practitioners such as data scientists, information scientists and project managers. The framework can be used to develop job descriptions, to support personal career planning and training needs analysis, to find courses and identify gaps in educational provision. It is free to download and use, and early reviews are positive.

“I’m impressed with your framework and appreciate your efforts for non-medical syntheses. This is something that many of us have needed for a long time.” Heather K Moberly, Agricultural and Veterinary Librarian, Penn State University Libraries, USA

“The role of science is vitally important in the case of agrifood system transformation, which requires solutions that transcend conventional policy boundaries,” commented Andy Robinson, Managing Director of CABI’s Publishing and Knowledge Business. “We believe evidence synthesis should play a part in these solutions and hope the Evidence Synthesis Skills Framework will help to mobilize and strengthen global capacity in evidence synthesis by training researchers, students, and information specialists to produce interdisciplinary, policy-relevant evidence synthesis.”

The Evidence Synthesis Skills Framework also enables users to find courses from multiple providers that help to build and improve evidence synthesis skills. CABI Academy is developing Fundamentals of Evidence Synthesis, a free, “verified” course for those new to evidence synthesis. High-quality research is the cornerstone of effective decision-making, but making sense of vast amounts of evidence requires evidence synthesis. This certified, online course will offer a foundation for anyone looking to engage with or commission evidence synthesis. Further details will be announced in due course.
