CABI has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC) to share its scientific expertise in pest and disease control and management as part of the APCC’s work to coordinate and harmonise all activities of the coconut industry in the Asia and Pacific regions.
The agreement to engage in technical cooperation was signed at CABI’s Malaysia office by CABI’s CEO Dr Trevor Nicholls and Mr Uron N. Salum, Executive Director of the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community. The MoU means CABI will assist the APCC in its mission to improve the productivity and profitability of millions of coconut farmers across Asia and the Pacific.
Dr Nicholls said, “The prospects for the coconut industry are very positive as the health benefits of coconut oil and water are recognised, along with the potential of the crop to provide food, fuel and fibre. Nevertheless, the industry is facing significant problems from an ageing tree stock and new pest and disease threats. CABI is delighted to have signed this MoU to partner with the APCC in order to help growers worldwide to overcome these challenges.”
The APCC is an intergovernmental organisation of coconut producing countries organised in 1969 under the aegis of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP). It was formed to promote, coordinate and harmonise all activities of the coconut industry in the Asia and Pacific regions which sustains the lives of millions of small farmers as well as those engaged in production, processing and marketing of coconut products.
The APCC is based in Jakarta, Indonesia, and has 18 coconut producing member countries, including Malaysia, Indonesia and India, accounting for over 90 percent of world coconut production and exports of coconut products.
