CABI’s training of Plant Protection MSc students at the Szent István University of Gödöllo in Hungary has reached a new landmark with the 10th course on research methods being delivered since its inception in 2010.
Dr Stefan Toepfer, who holds an Adjunct Professorship at the university and works closely with Associate Professor Dr Márk Szalai as well as other scientists from the Plant Protection Institute of the university, has now helped train over 320 students in state-of-the-art research design and methodologies in agriculture.
The main objective of the course is to enable students to independently conduct their two-year Masters’ thesis research, and covers all aspects of study design, planning, data analysis, result evaluation as well as methods in literature review and scientific writing.
The course, which is made up of 28 hours of training, also features specific topics in agricultural research methods such as pest forecasting, threshold models, dose-efficiency response trials and phytotoxicity assessments.
It is run twice a year for Hungarian and international MSc students in plant protection with the next course being held in April 2019.
Professor Jozsef Kiss, head of the institute, said, ‘This course is essential in elevating the quality of our students’ ability to apply essential research methods to an understanding of agricultural science in all its forms.’
