Radio campaign empowers women farmers in Ghana

Summary

In Ghana, women farmers face barriers to agricultural extension advice. This limits their productivity and impacts food security. With partners, CABI has delivered a radio campaign to improve their access to agricultural knowledge. It reached over half a million listeners, strengthening women’s identity as farmers and encouraging shared leadership in rural farming households.

The story

Women farmers in Ghana face serious barriers when it comes to receiving agricultural extension advice, especially compared to men. However, with greater access to information, they have the potential to significantly boost food production and increase their incomes. When women build farming businesses, they play a critical role in solving hunger and poverty.

Social norms often obstruct women’s ability to lead in agricultural entrepreneurship. In Ghana, CABI discovered gendered beliefs were hindering their potential. To address gender inequality, CABI and partners promoted access to climate-smart agricultural advice for women farmers in rural communities using radio programmes. The campaign has changed perceptions.

Working with Farm Radio International, the initiative addressed social norms and encouraged women’s participation in farming. The 16-week radio programme helped women benefit from extension services covering topics such as barriers to credit, land, and legal rights. It built their confidence and encouraged men to share leadership roles with women.

The project was a huge success, reaching over half a million listeners with 123 live programmes. Many women reported receiving valuable farming knowledge and a change in the way they, and others, saw themselves as farmers:

“At first, I didn’t know that you have to dress appropriately before spraying pesticides. But after listening to your programme, I learnt how to dress properly to protect myself when spraying my crops.” – Akosua Manu

I no longer see myself as just helping. I’m a farmer, and I’m proud of it. Your words do more than inform – they inspire. Farmers like me don’t just need knowledge. We need encouragement. Thank you for reminding me that I belong in this field.” – Esther Benko

“By giving my wife ownership of part of our farming operations, I’ve seen a significant shift in our family dynamics. The peace and unity we now experience is proof that true empowerment benefits everyone.” – Agya Ahen
