I am trained in entomology with a background in isolating and culturing fungal entomopathogens and conducting bioassays. I have studied the infection rate of the elephantiasis filarial worm in mosquitoes.
Prior to joining CABI, I worked as a teaching assistant at the African Regional Postgraduate Programme in Insect Science, University of Ghana, assisting students with research, demonstrating practical and laboratory exercises, and managing insectary. In addition, I worked as a research assistant at WHO Polio laboratory of Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, Legon (Ghana), culturing and identifying polio virus .
Within CABI, I have been involved in developing efficient and locally adaptive fly larvae production systems, optimizing methods for collection and use of termites as animal feed and assessing the nutritive value of insects as feed.
I am also interested in the the use of environmentally safe methods (especially biological agents) of protecting plants and livestock against arthropod pests to ensure the production of safe and healthy food to feed the world’s population.
Our centre in Ghana serves West Africa – a region made up of 15 states, and with a population of about 300 million. This is a region where agriculture is of huge importance. However there are significant challenges to effective trade in agricultural commodities in this region.
Poultry farming is practised by almost all smallholder farmers in West Africa but feed and protein sources are becoming increasingly expensive here, affecting meat and egg production and reducing family income. Fish farmers suffer a similar problem. We are promoting the use of insects, which are a natural food source for poultry and fish, and endorsed by the FAO as a tool to alleviate poverty.
