The Index of Fungi compiles recently published names of Fungi (living and fossil) at all ranks from world literature, and also includes some related organisms now classified in the Protozoa and Chromista. The resource consists of a biannual listing of some 2,000 names per annum, providing full bibliographic and nomenclatural details of new taxa, and new and revised names at all ranks, arranged alphabetically and with host/substratum and epithet/name indexes, cumulating into a volume over 10 years.

Since 1940, the Index of Fungi has continued the catalogues of Saccardo, Petrak, Zahlbruckner and Lamb in listing full details of new and replacement names and recombinations of fungi and related organisms, now at all ranks. Standardised author names and full bibliographic references are provided. The systematic position of genera and ranks above is indicated, following the classification of the latest edition of CABIs Dictionary of the Fungi
Typification and collection details are given, along with geographical and host/substratum data; nomenclatural comments according to the latest International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi and Plants (Melbourne, 2012) are appended as appropriate.
