I have over 45 years experience in plant disease identification and management in tropical agriculture and forestry. Over the past 30 years, since joining CABI, I have specialized in the use of fungi for the biological control of invasive weeds, pests and plant diseases. I have also published over 200 scientific papers on plant and insect pathology, including a standard reference book.

During my career I have undertaken numerous short-term consultancies for various funding agencies, including: FAO/ UNDP – Management of rhinoceros beetle of coconuts in Philippines; FAO – Investigation of tree die-back disease in the Seychelles; GEF – Survey of diseases of crops and endemic plant species in the Galápagos Archipelago, training of Ecuadorian National Park staff in plant disease quarantine; USDA – Plant disease surveys in Latin America as part of Alternative Crops Programme; UNDP – Assessment of biological control programmes against drug crops; Texas A & M – USAID Coffee Project for Central America.

Currently, I am helping to develop projects; whilst mentoring students and colleagues at CABI and the Universidade Federal de Vicosa (Minas Gerais, Brazil) and also undertaking research on the use of fungal endophytes for the management of plant diseases and leaf-cutting ants.
