PlantwisePlus in Uganda

In Uganda, agriculture is a core sector of the economy and the largest employer. However, farmers in Uganda face various social and environmental challenges – such as the spread of invasive species, crop pests and diseases which affect yields and livelihoods.

PlantwisePlus is harnessing the latest technology to empower farmers with the information and skills to mitigate potentially devastating crop pests and diseases more readily. Key PlantwisePlus activities in Uganda include youth and agro-dealer training.

Pest preparedness

Support partners to apply pest risk registers to assess pest risks.
Conduct regular meetings with the nominated Technical Working Group (TWG) to provide information on the Pest Risk Register (PRR) to understand and prioritize pest risks.
Conduct plant health rallies to sensitize farmers, traders, and extension workers on mango mealybug threat and management practices to mobilize a community response.
Distribute mango mealybug information materials to key stakeholders to support effective and sustainable pest management.
Conduct a delimiting survey to establish mango mealybug spread in the country to inform response.

Pesticide risk reduction

Complete stakeholder assessments and establish the Pesticide Risk Reduction Working Group to coordinate a national response to reducing pesticide risk.
Review technical reports, prepare a draft pesticide risk reduction roadmap with the National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) and other stakeholders to guide next steps.
Support policy work to develop criteria for post-registration of molecules to strengthen regulation.
Develop a strategy for Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) on pesticide risk reduction for campaign messaging and implementation.
Implement Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) campaign to influence positive changes among farming communities.
Continue classical biocontrol of papaya mealybug with parasitoid rearing and releases to reduce pest populations.
Prepare a scientific publication on parasitoid establishment and impacts to share evidence and support wider adoption.

Farmer advisory services

Develop plant clinic operations SMART goals with Districts and Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) partners to improve performance.
Assess plant clinic performance and present findings to Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) to identify gaps and improve service delivery.
Train extension staff on the use of PlantwisePlus digital tools to strengthen advisory services.
Pursue agreements with private sector to integrate PlantwisePlus digital tools into their platforms to expand digital tool reach.
Train Master Trainers for digital tools and roll out this training to farmers.
Review and develop training curriculum for Agro-Input Dealer (AID) safe use manual to support the safe use and handling of pesticides.
Train national Agro-Input Dealer (AID) Trainers of Trainers (TOTs) on the reviewed curriculum to build national training capacity on safe pesticide handling and use.
Pilot training of agrodealers using the revised curriculum to test and refine the approach.
Hold feedback meeting with agrodealers on training and collate the data to inform curriculum improvements.
Select and train second cohort of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) champions for citrus crops to expand peer-to-peer IPM promotions.
Provide technical backstopping and follow-up support to Local Seed Businesses (LSB) groups through coaching sessions.
Conduct an experiential field visit for LSB groups.
Hold review meetings with LSB groups to assess progress and plan next steps.
Deliver technical, mentorship, and soft skills training to Rubanga Agriservice Providers mentored by their trained peers to support youth agribusiness.

Due to increasing plant health threats, more pesticides are used every year around the world. PlantwisePlus recognizes the urgent need to increase the uptake of lower-risk plant protection products by farmers.

The Farmer Advisory pathway is focused on enhancing knowledge and uptake of integrated pest management (IPM) practices through responsive digital advisory tools.
