PlantwisePlus in Pakistan

Pakistan's agriculture sector is by far the country's largest employer, with smallholder farmers playing a vital role in feeding the country's growing population.

Working with partners, PlantwisePlus is enhancing crop health and farmers' livelihoods. Key projects in Pakistan include the release of a biocontrol agent to safeguard crops from invasive plant species, such as parthenium weed and the establishing of local facilities for the mass rearing of lower-risk plant protection solutions.

Pest preparedness

Pesticide risk reduction

Establish three commercial Trichogramma Rearing Facilities (TRF) to promote biological pest control.
Facilitate the formation of national biopesticide registration guidelines in collaboration with regulatory bodies, to enhance national capacity for risk management and data-driven decision-making.
Create a Pesticide Risk Reduction Forum to steer actions towards reducing pesticide risks.
Develop IPM guidelines for specific tomato crops and training of trainers sessions to build capacity in implementing IPM for tomatoes in 3 provinces.
Support the government in identifying Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs) and develop a roadmap for their phase-out to reduce reliance on hazardous pesticides.
Conduct awareness campaigns on HHPs, including media, radio, and field days, to increase farmer awareness.

Farmer advisory services

Train over 2,500 plant doctors to provide crop health advice to farmers.
Establish over 1,000 plant clinics to provide farmers with local crop advice
Develop a library of 200 Pest Management Decision Guides to support plant doctors.
Form a PlantwisePlus national forum to streamline plant clinic operations.
Promote CABI Digital Tools to increase uptake of integrated IPM practices.
Establish a National Data Centre at the DPP Office to consolidate plant clinic data, generate regular reports, and support pest forecasting systems.
Create a digital hub at the National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) to assist researchers with data-driven agricultural innovations.
Establish a Gender Technical Working Group to ensure inclusivity in agriculture.

In Zambia, PlantwisePlus activities include supporting Zambian farmers manage invasive species such as cassava brown streak disease.

Pest Preparedness

PlantwisePlus supports the development and enhancement of processes that enable countries and regional organizations to quickly and effectively identify, prioritize and respond to pest threats, integrating the latest information on pest distribution and climate change models.

Pesticide Risk Reduction

Due to increasing plant health threats, more pesticides are used every year around the world. PlantwisePlus recognizes the urgent need to increase the uptake of lower-risk plant protection products by farmers.

Farmer Advisory

The Farmer Advisory pathway is focused on enhancing knowledge and uptake of integrated pest management (IPM) practices through responsive digital advisory tools.
