Supporting smallholder farmers to predict, prepare for, and prevent plant health threats

Smallholder farmers produce around one-third of the world’s food, yet up to 40% of crops are lost each year to pests and diseases.

Climate change is accelerating plant health challenges worldwide. Smallholder farmers are on the front lines of this crisis.

Plant pests and invasive species, like fall armyworm, threaten crop yields and food security. Farmers often rely on pesticides to control them, but misuse can harm human health and beneficial insects.

With the support of partners, PlantwisePlus strengthens national plant health systems. We do this by equipping farmers with actionable knowledge and promoting sustainable crop protection practices that protect both livelihoods and biodiversity.

The challenge

Protecting farmers from increasing plant health threats

500+ million smallholder farmers are cultivating just 24% of agricultural land, but producing 30% of global crops; supporting these farmers is critical to food security.

Climate-driven pest pressures

Changing weather patterns are introducing new pests and diseases to farming communities unprepared to manage them.

Limited access to expertise

Smallholder farmers lack timely access to plant health information and sustainable management advice.

Pesticide risks

Inappropriate use of pesticides harms human health, ecosystems, and undermines the natural resources agriculture depends on.

Our approach

Building resilient plant health systems

Through digital and face-to-face approaches, PlantwisePlus provides access to accurate information, training and support to a range of agricultural service providers who play a critical role in making agriculture more productive and resilient. These interventions help empower farmers to safeguard their crops and livelihoods.

By supporting plant health, we strengthen communities, protect ecosystems, and create lasting impact that extend beyond the field.
