Abstract

An epidemiological investigation of 10 mammalian species and 32 poultry species in western Romania revealed the presence of cryptosporidiosis in cattle, pigs and chickens for the first time in Romania. In calves the prevalence was between 36.8 and 61.7%. The infection was significantly higher (P<0.002) in Baltata cu Negru Romaneasca (dairy cow) compared with Baltata Romaneasca (mixed breed) and increased in 8- to 14-day-old calves. No differences between prevalence according to sex were observed. In broilers the prevalence of cryptosporidiosis varied between 0 and 25.2%; the highest was noted in 22- to 28-day-old chickens.
