Abstract

In an outbreak on one farm 67 of 265 cattle slaughtered during two years had cysticercosis. Counterimmunoelectrophoresis of serum samples from slaughter cattle showed 44.8% sensitivity and 86.4% specificity for homologous Taenia saginata strobilus antigen, compared with 28.3% and 89.9% for...

Abstract

Tests in 126 cattle, 32 of which were shown to have cysticerci after slaughter, showed 53.1% sensitivity and 90.4% specificity for homologous Taenia saginata strobilus antigen, compared with 53.1% and 80.9% for heterologous T. crassiceps larval antigen, and 16.7% and 89.5% for Echinococcus...

Abstract

The detection and control of cysticerciasis on a large cattle farm in Czechoslovakia are discussed. ELISA detected 15.3% more cases than did the standard faecal tests. Infection rates in bullocks were consequently reduced from 26.4% in 1980 to 10.6% in 1983.

Abstract

9 bull calves, with a mean age of 4 months, were infected with Taenia saginata ova (3 × 85 000 or 6 × 200 000 ova) and were observed for up to 261 days pi. Increased temperature, cough, muscle tremor and locomotor disturbances lasting up to day 50 pi were noted in early infection. Leukocytosis and...

Abstract

For Czechoslovakia as a whole, the average prevalence rates for 1976 to 1985 were 1.6 to 1.8% for C. bovis and 0.001 to 0.015% (sporadic) for unilocular hydatid in cattle. The rates for unilocular hydatid in sheep were 0.2 to 0.6% and in pigs 0.001-0.014%. Epizootiological aspects are briefly...

Abstract

The adverse effects of severe cysticercosis on the composition of meat and adipose tissue were not overcome by anthelmintic treatment, because the cysticerci remained in the tissues. Treatment had no effect on the outcome of routine meat inspection.

Slaughter cattle from the Olomonc, Hodonín and Brno districts of Czechoslovakia examined between 1976 and 1979 were infected with C. bovis at the rate of 0.49-0.77%. The infection rates are briefly discussed in relation to husbandry and seasonal variations.

Abstract

Seven calves aged 2-3.5 months were given by mouth 5, 10, 25, 70, 95, 113 and 120 X 103 eggs of Taenia saginata. After a dose of 70 000 eggs antibodies were detected with ELISA only one week later, and after the other doses at two to three weeks. From the fourth to the tenth week after infection...
