Abstract

Ten of 20 heifers aged 9-18 months were each dosed with 2 g albendazole 31, 62 and 93 days after being turned out to graze in spring, the other ten were left untreated, and grazed an adjoining strip of pasture. This treatment prevented parasitic gastroenteritis, and the treated animals had lower...

Abstract

The anthelmintic triclabendazole was given to 22 cows at 10-14 mg/kg body weight. Unlike some other benzimidazoles, the unchanged drug did not appear in milk, but its sulfone metabolite was present at up to 1.4 mg/litre, with peak concn. after 20 h, and persistence for at least 10 days. Less than...

Abstract

The bolus was designed to release three doses of 2 g of albendazole after 31, 62 and 93 days at pasture. Fourteen weeks after treatment, 15 treated calves, aged 5-9 or 13-14 days at the start of the trial, had a much lower output of nematode eggs, better weight gain, lower blood pepsinogen, and...

Abstract

In trials conducted on one farm over three years, some of the 20-28 calves born each year were given a morantel bolus (Paratect) at the start of the grazing season. Examination of faeces from treated and untreated calves during the subsequent 6 months confirmed the efficacy of the anthelmintic in...

Abstract

Groups of 4 calves received a lungworm vaccination (Dictyocaulus viviparus), a vaccination combined with a morantel sustained-release bolus (Paratect) together with the 2 second vaccination dose, a vaccination combined with a Paratect bolus 14 days after the 2 dose, a Paratect bolus alone or...

Abstract

About half of 500 cows and heifers in two herds were treated with tiabendazole soon after calving, and the other half were not treated. Treatment increased the milk yield of heifers by about 200-300 kg, but it had no effect on older cows. No observations on helminth infections were made. [See also...

Abstract

T. vitulorum was diagnosed recently in Belgium in imported cattle of French origin. The infective larvae are present in the milk and colostrum; they do not undergo further migration in the tissues of calves. Treatment with levamisole at a dosage of 5 mg/kg results in their complete disappearance.

Abstract

Data on spectrum, mode of action, resistance to and toxicity of anthelmintics used in the Netherlands against gastro-intestinal helminths and lungworms in ruminants are reviewed. Three major groups of anthelmintics are described: benzimidazole derivatives; levamisole; and pyrantel and morantel.

Abstract

Tests on 92 calves infected at 4-5 months of age with 10-15 metacercariae per kg body wt., and treated 98-105 days after infection showed that Bilevon (niclofolan), Acedist (bromfenofos) and Du 51.635 (tetrabromsalicylide) were about equal in efficacy, while hexachlorophene was inferior to the...
