Abstract

This article discusses and compares various oestrus detection methods in a commercial UK dairy herd. The accuracy and effectiveness of leg pedometers with neck collars, heat mount detectors and scratchcards in detecting true oestrus events in dairy cows are highlighted.

Abstract

An overview on the diagnosis of Schmallenberg virus in calves and lambs is provided. The diagnostic tools used and their accuracy and sensitivity are discussed. Focus is given on metagenomics, RT-PCR, microarray chips and antibody testing.
