Abstract

The use of a head restraint when stunning cattle was made compulsory in UK in 1992. Observation on 1081 cattle at 4 abattoirs confirmed that a head restraint improved the accuracy of stunning. A fixed shelf was preferred to a cantilever head yoke and a head yoke with chin lift.
