Abstract

The serum IgG response of cattle with cysticercosis caused by Taenia saginata was studied in an ELISA in which a T. saginata metacestode surface extract was used as antigen. In experimentally infected calves, a sharp rise in specific antibody levels was found 3-4 weeks after the infection followed...

Abstract

15 metacestode antigens from T. saginata were defined by Laurell crossed immunoelectrophoresis and investigated for their potential use in immunodiagnosis of bovine cysticercosis. Several antigens cross reacted with those of some common cattle parasites. Three of the antigens, designated as numbers ...

Abstract

A series of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) produced against excretory and secretory products from T. saginata cysticerci from calves 10 and 20 weeks pi, were tested for their ability to detect circulating antigen in a double antibody sandwich ELISA. Two MAbs, 12G5 and 2H8, proved to be highly...

Abstract

This study reports on the purification of an antigen predominant within the vesicular fluid (VF) of T. crassiceps metacestodes and shown to share identity with the major vesicular fluid protein of the T. saginata larval stage. Purification was achieved by gel filtration of the VF on Sephacryl S-300 ...

Abstract

The rates of Echinococcus infection in man and meat animals (intermediate hosts) and dogs (the definitive host) must be defined before control programmes can be evaluated. The prevalence of echinococcosis in meat animals in Spain is reviewed, with reference to the organs affected and the rates of...

Abstract

In an outbreak on one farm 67 of 265 cattle slaughtered during two years had cysticercosis. Counterimmunoelectrophoresis of serum samples from slaughter cattle showed 44.8% sensitivity and 86.4% specificity for homologous Taenia saginata strobilus antigen, compared with 28.3% and 89.9% for...

Abstract

An antigenic fraction (ThFAS) isolated from Taenia hydatigena metacestode cyst fluid was used in an ELISA to detect antibodies to T. saginata in experimentally and naturally infected cattle. In 10 calves given 1000 to 100 000 T. saginata eggs (20% to 60% viability), IgG and IgM antibodies were...

Abstract

Tests in 126 cattle, 32 of which were shown to have cysticerci after slaughter, showed 53.1% sensitivity and 90.4% specificity for homologous Taenia saginata strobilus antigen, compared with 53.1% and 80.9% for heterologous T. crassiceps larval antigen, and 16.7% and 89.5% for Echinococcus...

Abstract

The diagnostic value of intradermal tests in pre-mortem diagnosis of bovine cysticercosis was evaluated using 126 bulls, 32 of which were positive at necropsy. Homologous antigens from Taenia saginata adults, heterologous antigens from T. crassiceps larvae and hydatid fluid from Echinococcus...

Abstract

The detection and control of cysticerciasis on a large cattle farm in Czechoslovakia are discussed. ELISA detected 15.3% more cases than did the standard faecal tests. Infection rates in bullocks were consequently reduced from 26.4% in 1980 to 10.6% in 1983.
