Abstract

Mammomonogamus nasicola occurred in 364 (34%) of 1062 zebu cattle examined from the Central African Empire. The mean intensity of infection was 2.8 pairs/animal, but larger numbers were not uncommon. The biology, pathology, economic and geographic distribution of M. nasicola in Africa are discussed.

Abstract

Abomasal nematodes were recovered from 89% of 157 cows slaughtered between March 1984 and April 1985, at an abattoir in East Flanders, Belgium. Faeces and blood were also collected from the animals. 118 cows (75%) had a low to moderate helminth burden (10-10 000) and 21 cows (13.5%) had a high...

Abstract

The calves grazed a pasture which had been used by bolus-treated animals in the three previous years. Despite an incomplete reduction of faecal egg shedding during the first months of the grazing season, bolus administration prevented parasitic gastro-enteritis in the calves. A weight gain...

Abstract

Blood pepsinogen concentrations in cattle were determined, using a simple, direct method based on the hydrolysing effect of serum on buffered bovine albumin substrate (2 g/dl). The amount of tyrosine released was measured at 680 nm, using the Folin and Ciocalteu colorimetric method. To ensure an...

Abstract

The course of serum pepsinogen concentration was studied in 6 calves infected experimentally with Ostertagia, and in 43 calves on 4 premises, exposed to infested pasture. Serum pepsinogen was also measured in 44 cows, 15 of which had positive faecal egg counts for Ostertagia. It was confirmed that...

Abstract

Ten of 20 heifers aged 9-18 months were each dosed with 2 g albendazole 31, 62 and 93 days after being turned out to graze in spring, the other ten were left untreated, and grazed an adjoining strip of pasture. This treatment prevented parasitic gastroenteritis, and the treated animals had lower...

Abstract

Levamisole was applied to 13 cattle aged 8-12 months as a pour-on formulation, 3, 6, and 9 weeks after the start of grazing at 10 mg/kg body weight. Another 13 were injected s.c. with ivermectin at 0.2 mg/kg 3 and 8 weeks after the start of grazing. Faecal output of nematode eggs was much lower in...

Abstract

Of 1249 male cattle examined in the slaughterhouse at Kandy, Sri Lanka, during 1987, 40% were infected with M. laryngeus (range 34 to 52%). The infection rate was highest (47%) in 2- to 2.5-year-old animals. In infected animals an average of 6.4 parasite pairs was found with higher numbers in older ...

Abstract

A second trial of the oxfendazole pulse-release bolus confirmed the good results against ostertagiasis of types I and II obtained previously in Belgium (Vercruysse et al. 1987). This was applied when the animals were turned out to graze in spring. Another "front-loaded" type of bolus, applied in...

Abstract

A 3-year analysis of 1653 individual records of plasma pepsinogen concentrations of 190 first season grazing calves in Belgium showed that only 196 records of 61 animals showed pepsinogen values above 3600 mU tyrosine and that only 26% of these were accompanied by visible clinical signs of...
