Abstract

Serum samples, from 58 half-bred horses, 100 racehorses and 16 foals, in Japan were tested for IgG using nephelometry and single radial immunodiffusion (SRID). Correlation coefficient and p value for SRID and nephelometry for the half-bred horses was 0.850 and <0.0005. For racehorses the mean IgG value was 1603 mg/dl. The IgG quantity for the foals at 7 days after birth ranged 140-1990 mg/dl, and 12 foals were treated for common cold, bronchitis or pneumonitis within 135 days after birth. It is concluded that foals are equally likely to suffer clinical illness regardless of their IgG quantities at 7 days after birth, although treated foals with lower IgG quantities tended to show clinical illness earlier after birth.
