Plus size women adventurers – breaking down stereotypes and building bonds

Women of all shapes and sizes are embracing global travel and championing diversity.

New York travel company Women High On Adventure (WHOA) launched a new tour – WHOA+, which embraces women who are plus size and love to travel. Often plus size women feel intimated by travelling as the reception they receive can be hostile. WHOA aims to change that, with tailored adventure packages which help women bond and make friendships regardless of shape and size.

Trekking tours for ‘Curvy crews’

The WHOA run many ‘women only’ tours. The most popular trekking expeditions are to Machu Picchu – Peru; Everest Base Camp – Nepal and Kilimanjaro – Tanzania. WHOA provides women with a structured, secure and more fun way to experience trekking than going ‘solo’. While they are not the first ‘women only’ travel company, WHOA are unique by tailoring tours exclusively for plus size ladies.

Their ‘Curvy Kili’ expedition provides women with advice and support throughout the training programme and trek. They say that often plus size women find it difficult to source necessities like clothing, sleeping bags and rucksacks. Also tour members say that many plus size ladies struggle to find tailored fitness programs for strenuous adventures, especially ones that don’t place emphasis on weight loss or dieting.

WHOA celebrate diversity within travellers

WHOA says “WHOA plus -here to inspire women to get outdoors and take on adventures at any size! These body positive trips offer the thrills and dance parties that come standard on WHOA adventures, plus the camaraderie of taking on a challenge with other like-bodied women.”

WHOA also run trips for ladies over 50+, their trip Kilimanjaro: Wise Wondrous Women 50+ Adventure is almost sold out. The boutique travel agency caters to demographics not often targeted by mainstream tourism. WHOA aims to empower women of every shape and size, age or race.
