The environmental dimension.

This chapter describes the five components of the environmental dimension of sustainable tourism, namely: natural resources; the natural environment; the farmed environment; wildlife; and the built environment. It also shows that: (i) tourism can have both negative and positive impacts on the environment, but on balance it has a negative impact on the environment; (ii) there is a set of principles that might make tourism more environmentally friendly; and (iii) environmental conservation has some inherent dangers. Two case studies (one from the UK and the other from Malaysia) on the environmental impacts of tourism are presented.
