The pomegranate: botany, production and uses.

Book cover for The pomegranate: botany, production and uses.

This is the first comprehensive book covering the botany, production, processing, health and industrial uses of the pomegranate (Punica granatum). This book provides information on how to increase yields and improve short- and medium-term grower profitability and sustainability. It covers practices to mitigate pests, diseases and abiotic stresses; yield-based nutrition management; cultural practic...

Chapter 12 (Page no: 357)

Diseases and management.

Pomegranate, which once had no major biotic problems except fruit borer, today faces a multitude of biotic stresses. Among them, bacterial and fungal diseases are prominent in pomegranate production regions, leading to considerable fruit losses throughout the growing season. More than 55 pathogens have been reported to cause around 37 different diseases on pomegranate. The major ones are discussed in this chapter. These include bacterial blight of pomegranate (caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. punicae), wilt diseases (including those caused by Ceratocystis fimbriata alone and/or root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita), Phytophthora blight (Phytophthora spp.), foliar and fruit diseases (caused by fungal pathogens), minor spots (Drechslera rostrata) and fruit rots (including those caused by Aspergillus niger, A. variecolor, Penicillium expansum), shoot blight and canker disease (Coniella granati), as well as viral, viroid and phytoplasmal diseases. Information is given on their control using different methods such as orchard sanitation, cultural practices, nutrient management, biological control, chemical control, use of defence inducers, and integrated disease management.
