Chapter 10 (Page no: 162)

Classical biological control of Mikania micrantha: the sustainable solution.

This chapter focuses on the application of classical biological control (CBC) of M. micrantha using natural enemies such as insects and fungi. A number of key issues that need to be addressed when considering CBC as a strategy for the control of invasive alien weeds are summarized. The release of the rust fungus (Puccinia spegazzinii) in Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Taiwan and Vanuatu appears to be the first success against M. micrantha and it is to be hoped that it will be a critical turning point.
