Description

Chapter 9 (Page no: 110)

Herbivory, parasitism and mutualism.

This chapter discusses the processes of herbivory, parasitism and mutualism in relation to invasive plants. Herbivory is usually non-fatal because plants have adapted avoidance, tolerance and inducible defence mechanisms, but it can alter the population dynamics of invasive species. The absence of herbivores may give invasive species an advantage. The introduction of herbivorous biological control agents attempts to remove this advantage. Parasitic plant species are especially troublesome in agricultural and forestry systems. Established mutualisms in native species can be disrupted by invasive species. Most invasive species do not form obligate mutualisms.
