Overview

Top of page

Avian tuberculosis affects companion, captive exotic, wild and domestic birds worldwide. The disease is most often caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium, although more than ten other mycobacterial species have been reported to infect birds.

The disease is characterised by chronic and progressive wasting and weakness. Diarrhoea is common. Some birds may show respiratory signs and occasionally sudden death occurs. Some birds may develop granulomatous ocular lesions.

For more information, see the general datasheet on tuberculosis.
