Bonamia exitiosa is a Haplosporidia protozoan parasite (Carnegie and Cochennec-Laureau, 2004) infecting haemocytes of several oyster species and inducing physiological disorders and often death of the animal (Dinamani et al., 1987; Cranfield et al., 2005). The parasite has a broad geographic distribution (Hill-Spanik et al., 2015). Introduction to naïve host populations can cause mass mortalities and have a dramatic impact on oyster production (Engelsma et al., 2014).

Hosts include the oysters Ostrea chilensis (Dinamani et al., 1987), O. angasi (Corbeil et al., 2006), O. edulis (Abollo et al., 2008; Narcisi et al., 2010) and O. stentina (Hill et al., 2010).

Distribution

The parasite has a broad geographic distribution (Hill-Spanik et al., 2015). Infection with B. exitiosa has been reported in O. chilensis in New Zealand (Dinamani et al., 1987); in O. angasi in Australia (Corbeil et al., 2006); in O. edulis in Spain (Abollo et al., 2008; Carrasco et al., 2012) and Italy (Narcisi et al., 2010), and in O. stentina in Tunisia (Hill et al., 2010).
