Overview

Top of page

Dermatophilosis is an exudative, pustular dermatitis, caused by the bacterium Dermatophilus congolensis, that mainly affects cattle, sheep and horses, but also goats, pigs, buffaloes, dromedary camels, dogs, cats, wild mammals and humans.

D. congolensis itself is not highly pathogenic, and a combination of factors is necessary for the development of clinical lesions, such as malnutrition, intense rainfalls and mechanical traumas (Woldemeskel, 2000; Woldemeskel and Taye, 2002; Kassaye et al., 2003). Where dermatophilosis has an important economic impact in West and Central Africa, as well as on some Caribbean islands, a major risk factor is the infestation by Amblyomma variegatum ticks (Chatikobo et al., 2009; Ndhlovu and Masika, 2015). Susceptibility to dermatophilosis is also influenced by genetics (Woldemeskel, 2000; Kassaye et al., 2003).
