Overview

Top of page

The Olympia oyster, Ostrea conchapila, once supported a Native American sustenance fishery and a commercial fishery on the west coast of the USA. It was an important food source for many coastal Native American tribes. However, overharvesting, water pollution, introduction of predators and competition with Crassostrea gigas led to a decline in the populations of O. conchapila. The different common names for O. conchapila reflect the habitats and geographic locations it is found in, or distinguish it from introduced species.

The Olympia oyster was, until the late 1990s, known as Ostrea lurida. It has since been designated Ostrea conchapila (Coan and Scott, 1997; Turgeon et al., 1998).
