Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a versatile, ubiquitous Gram-negative bacterium that grows in soil, marshes and coastal marine habitats, as well as on plants and animal tissues. Infection by Pseudomonas aeruginosa can be associated with fleece rot in sheep, septicaemia (Wiese, 1998), otitis externa (Blood and Studdert, 1988), mastitis (Sol et al., 1998; Daly et al., 1999; Heras et al., 1999; Rapoport et al., 1999) and upper respiratory tract disease in birds (Prasad et al., 1999; Bailey et al., 2000; Samour, 2000; Pandey et al., 2001). Infection with P.aeruginosa can occur in all species.

P.aeruginosa is a common isolate from wounds, burns, urinary infections and accumulations of pus (Blood and Studdert, 1988).

Bovine mastitis as a result of P.aeruginosa is rare and usually occurs as sporadic cases following mammary contact with contaminated material, such as contaminated water (Radostits et al., 1994). The resulting disease can be clinically subacute, acute or severe (Radostits et al., 1994; Sol et al., 1998). The mammary gland swells and clotted, discoloured milk is produced (Radostits et al., 1994).

Otitis externa is an inflammation of the ear, which is characterized by frequent shaking of the head and pawing at the affected ear. Foul smelling discharge from the ear can also occur. In the case of upper respiratory tract infections of birds, nodular white or yellow caseous lesions (Samour, 2000), and respiratory distress can be observed (Pandey et al., 2001). In dogs and cats the disease manifests as an ear, nose and throat infection (Weiss et al., 1998).

P. aeruginosa is an important agent of food spoilage and can be found in eggs, milk and meat.

P.aeruginosa can affect humans. Infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in cystic fibrosis sufferers. This is due to the chronic lung infections the bacteria causes (Yu et al., 2000).
