Pathogen Characteristics

Top of page

The VS virus is in the genus Vesiculovirus, in the family Rhabdoviridae. Rhabdoviridae have a bullet-shaped virion, measure approximately 75 by 180 nm, contain a single strand of negative-sense RNA, and are surrounded by a lipid bilayer envelope containing the antigenic peplomers responsible for stimulating neutralizing antibody production (Banerjee, 1987; Fenner et al., 1987). The RNA of VSV is 11 kb in length and codes for five proteins (Banerjee, 1987).

Vesicular stomatitis in the Americas is primarily associated with infection by one of two serologically distinct serotypes, VSV serotype Indiana (VS-IN) or VSV serotype New Jersey (VS-NJ). The data sheet for vesicular stomatitis refers only to these two major serotypes, as the extent of relatedness and clinical relevance of other strains and VS-IN subtypes remains unclear (Federer et al., 1967).

The viruses are easily inactivated by exposure to 1% formalin, 10% sodium hypochlorite, or other commonly used disinfectants. They are also inactivated by exposure to 58°C for 30 minutes; however, they can survive in the environment in soil at temperatures ranging from 4 to 6°C.
