A pest alert for Vespa mandarinia was issued by the Ministry of Agriculture in British Columbia, Canada in September 2019 in response to the first sightings for the state (Vancouver Island, August 2019https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/farming-natural-resources-and-industry/agriculture-and-seafood/animal-and-crops/plant-health/pest_alert_asian_hornet.pdf. A dead specimen was also identified from Washington State, USA, near the Canadian border in December 2019 https://wastatedeptag.blogspot.com/2019/12/pest-alert-asian-giant-hornet.html. Monitoring of the region will be carried out in 2020. This large hornet feeds on insects and is a threat to honeybee hives. It nests in the ground and remains dormant during autumn and winter. It may sting humans if disturbed.
