Overview

Top of page

White tail disease (WTD) is a disease of the giant freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii caused by Macrobrachium rosenbergii nodavirus (MrNV) and its associate extra small virus (XSV) (Qian et al., 2003). The clinical sign of disease is a milky whitish appearance in larvae/postlarvae/early juveniles (Arcier et al., 1999). First reported in the French West Indies, the disease has since been found in Taiwan, China, India, Thailand, Australia and Malaysia (Hameed and Bonami, 2012). Mortalities may reach 100% (Qian et al., 2003; Sudthongkong, 2007) and the virus causes significant economic losses in hatcheries and farms (Bonami and Sri Widada, 2011).

White tail disease is on the list of diseases notifiable to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). For further information on this disease from OIE, see the website: www.oie.int
