Summary of Invasiveness

Top of page

This tubeworm species is separated from Pileolaria berkeleyana in Appletans et al. (2012), although some databases still refer to the two species under P. berkeleyana. A native to Japan and the Kamchatka Peninsular, Russian Far East, it was introduced (date unknown) to Portsmouth harbour, UK, and has been recorded further along the southwest coast in Devon and Cornwall (Eno et al., 1997). It is likely to have arrived and spread on ships' hulls as a fouling organism, but it is possible that the Japanese seaweed Sargassum muticum may also be a vector (Eno et al., 1997).
