Summary of Invasiveness

Top of page

Adult females of P. longidigitus are fish-parasitizing copepods; the larval stages and adult males remain planktonic. The species was first described from China and subsequently reported from other countries in Asia and the UK. It was recorded in the Gulf of Mexico in 2001 (and possibly before that as Paraergasilus sp.) and has recently been found in plankton samples from Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta in Colombia (Fuentes-Reines, 2012). It is probably spread with introduced fish to aquaculture facilities but it was noted that the Colombia location is a protected area with no commercial aquaculture nearby (Fuentes-Reines, 2012). A full description is provided in Fuentes-Reines (2012).
