Abstract

Habitat and seed germination ability of Heteropogon contortus (Poaceae) in Kagawa Prefecture, Shikoku, western Japan.

Abstract

Germination ability and habitat of Heteropogon contortus (L.) P. Beauv. ex Roem. & Schult. (Poaceae) in Kagawa Pref., Shikoku, Japan are reported. This plant is found only on the open dry ridge of Mt. Kiyama in Marugame City. The thin nutrient-poor soil on the dry rocky hills may allow the survival of this grass. Due to both the habitat restriction, and the difficulty of identification without inflorescence, this species might have been overlooked in the local floras, especially in western Japan. As for seed germination test, comparatively high seed germination ratio was observed and reproduction by seeds for this population was inferred.
