Research review on features and molecular mechanism of wax formation in Brassicaceae.
Mainly composed of vegetables, oil crops, medicinal plants, ornamental plants and dyewood, Brassicaceae is a plant that can be annual, biennial or perennial, also as the most important family of vegetable and oil crops in China. Wax, comprised with very long chain fatty acids and corresponding derivatives, a layer of protective structure formed on plant surface to adapt different environmental conditions, plays an important role in resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. It helps maintain water balance, reflect ultraviolet rays, reduce external mechanical damage, decrease low temperature damage, resist invasion of bacteria and fungi, prevent fruit cracking and fight off insect invasion. This paper, with a brief review of the type, physiological function, genetic characteristics, biosynthetic and transport pathways of wax, is intended to provide reference for the study of wax metabolism in Brassicaceae plants.
