Antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticle against Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. punicae.

Abstract

Bacterial blight of Pomegranate by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. punicae decrease production of fruit. Disease infects flowers, leaves, twigs, stem, buds and fruits. It is dangerous when fruit get infected. Disease causes an average 30-50% loss. However, under favorable environmental conditions 80-100% loss. X. axonopodis was isolated from infected fruit, stem and leaves and maintained on NAS medium. Pure strain proved Gram staining, oxidase, catalase and starch dehydrogenase tests. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized using Trichoderma viride and extracts of onion and garlic. Strong surface plasmon resonance at 444 nm indicates the synthesis of silver nanoparticle. SEM analysis proved silver nanoparticle size in the range 5-10 μm. Spread plate and colony count techniques proved significant antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles against Xanthomonas axonopodis.
