Abstract

Crossbreeding and its impact on the status of cattle breeds in India: a review.

Abstract

The "white revolution" is closely linked to the introduction of crossbreeding in India. Since its use from 1875 till now, it has first helped India to become self sufficient and then the highest milk producing country in the world. Several crossbreds were developed using the indigenous and exotic cattle breeds. As a result of crossbreeding the F1 progeny showed the hybrid vigour in terms of increased milk production, decreased calving interval, early age of sexual maturity etc but maintaining this vigor in subsequent generation s require very delicately prepared breeding program along with better infrastructure for artificial insemination. The review highlights the history of cross breeding in India along with the development of some of the important crossbreds, its consequences and future prospects.
