First report of orange rust caused by Puccinia kuehnii on sugarcane on the Island of Reunion.
In July and August 2018, in different areas of Reunion Island, typical rust symptoms were observed on leaves of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) cvs. R062006 and R062007. The intensity of the disease was low to moderate. The causal pathogen was isolated and identified as Puccinia kuehnii based on morphological characteristics and sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the ribosomal DNA. This is thought to be the first report of P. kuehnii on sugarcane in Reunion Island.
