Abstract

Water hyacinth: adding value to a noxious weed.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the invasiveness of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), a perennial, free-floating aquatic weed notorious for its rapid reproduction. The negative effects of this weed to aquatic life and human activities are discussed and the efficacy of various measures to control this noxious weed is presented. Information on some value-added applications/products of water hyacinth, such as industrial enzyme sources, animal feeds, organic fertilizers and biofuel feedstocks, among others, are highlighted.
