Invasive Species Compendium

Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

Catálogo de árbores senlleiras de Tomiño: a municipal initiative of environmental revaluation.

Abstract

In 2016 and 2017, the Council of Tomiño (Galicia) has started an inventory of trees and unique formations of the municipal territory (Catálogo de Árbores Senlleiras do Concello de Tomiño), based on four main sources of information: visual prospecting of the territory, compilation of pre-existing documentation, request for neighborhood participation and collaboration of Forest communities. Unlike other similar listings in Galicia, the representation of all the native species has been prioritized, totaling 93 specimens and formations of 20 taxa, mainly Quercus robur, Q. suber and Fraxinus angustifolia. In addition, exotic trees (except those considered as invasive species) existing in gardens, parks or other anthropized areas (32 of 20 spp.) have been incorporated, discarding those that grow in natural and semi-natural habitats, unless they could reach relevance in the context of Galicia, case of a Quercus cerris formation. Also worthy of attention at Galician level are some specimens of Crataegus monogyna, Fraxinus angustifolia, Cupressus lusitanica, Camellia japonica, Magnolia grandiflora and Rhododendrum arboreum, as well as a Quercus suber formation.
