Abstract

New record of Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) from north of Iran.

Abstract

In October 2012, in a survey conducted to study the flora of paddy fields and aquatic ecosystems of Gilan province (Iran), an unknown species was encountered in Aynak lagoon in southeast of Rasht, densely covering a surface of approximately 12 ha of the pond. Comparing the flora of the pond with previous years or adjacent ponds showed that the new weed was dominant in interference with the natural flora of the aquatic ecosystems in the area and almost all indigenous flora of this pond disappeared due to the introduction of the new weed. The species was identified as water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) based on morphological analysis. This is thought to be a new record for the flora of Iran from Gilan province in the north of Iran.
