Abstract

New and emerging diseases and pests of tropical fruit crops.

Abstract

As the production of, and international and domestic commerce in tropical fruits increases, so too has the importance of alien diseases and pests that affect its production and marketability. Notable insect pests that affect production and trade are seed weevils of avocado (Conotrachelus perseae) and mango (Sternochetus spp.), and fruit flies (mainly Anastrepha spp. and Bactrocera spp.). However, this brief review focuses solely on alien diseases. Numerous diseases with limited ranges would decimate the production of major commodities if these spread to important production centers. Space does not allow an exhaustive summary of these problems below. Rather, examples of such problems are discussed with emphases on its spread, potential impact, and management.
