Abstract

Rate of oxygen release from fresh waters.

Abstract

In this study, the intra-annual regimes in the calculated rates of oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange between the atmosphere and the surface of two water bodies with different sizes and hydro-ecological conditions, were compared. Lake Baikal, a deep oligotrophic lake; and Mozhaisk reservoir, a small, mesotrophic-eutrophic reservoir with 150-times more water exchange than Lake Baikal, were chosen for the study. The significant differences in the rates of gas evasions and invasions in the lake and the reservoir allow the rates of these processes to serve as integral indicators to parameterize the self-purification capacity of fresh water bodies from organic pollutants.
