Releasing grey squirrels into the wild.
This article discussed the current petition of wildlife centres versus the new law by Defra which refused to issue a new licence this 28th of March 2019 allowing wildlife centres to release grey squirrels back into the wild. This petition will continue to run until June 2019 and if it collects 100 000 signatures before then, there will have to be a parliamentary debate before Defra can push this piece of legislation through. The issue that will be tackled is the claim that grey squirrels are responsible for the decline in red squirrel populations and that they destroy trees and other wildlife. These opinions are opposed by many experts on the subject thus the petition was made.
