Aelurostrongylosis in a young kitten in the UK.
Postmortem lung samples from an 11- to 12-week-old male kitten from a feral colony in Wales, UK, were submitted for histopathological assessment in December 2018. The clinical history was sudden dyspnoea and death. Microscopical examination of the lung revealed numerous metastrongyloid lungworms within the majority of alveolar spaces and smaller airways. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues confirmed the diagnosis of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus infection. The kitten was heavily infected despite treatment with eprinomectin (Broadline) and died on 11 December 2018.
