Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

Control of the small hive beetle, Aethina tumida, in Germany.

Abstract

The small hive beetle is endemic to Africa, south of the Sahara. Nowadays, the small hive beetle is an invasive species in many countries causing problems in apiculture. Since 2014, the pest is present in Calabria, southern Italy, and thus moved closer to Germany. Successful control seems only possible if early detection is guaranteed and if a ready concept exists that can be implemented quickly and consistently. The following article describes procedures that should help the authorities to implement successful control or containment of the small hive beetle in Germany.
