First report of papaya anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum salsolae in India.
In August 2016, pawpaw fruits showing typical anthracnose symptoms of small sunken spots were observed in two different fields in Badnapur, Jalna, Maharashtra, India, and ∼15% of the papaya plants were affected. The pawpaw fruits were semi ripe when harvested and ten fruits were incubated at 28°C in the dark for 4-5 days at 90% humidity to allow for further development of disease symptoms. Sunken necrotic fruit tissue was then examined under a microscope. Identification of isolates was based on morphological characteristics, molecular data (PCR amplification of the partial β-tubulin gene and GAPDH gene) and pathogenicity. All ten fruits were found to be infected with Colletotrichum gloeosporioides [Glomerella cingulata] and among them 6 fruits had a mixed infection of C. gloeosporioides and Colletotrichum salsolae. Only identification of the C. salsolae isolate is described in this paper. In India, Colletotrichum karstii, C. fructicola and C. gloeosporioides along with some other unverifiable records have been reported to cause pawpaw anthracnose. This is thought to be the first report of pawpaw anthracnose caused by C. salsolae in India.
