Abstract
Do we need selective breeding of an indigenous shrimp species in India.
Abstract
This article discusses the threats to industry (diseases, biosecurity, and high summer temperature), production efficiency, farming in the traditional belts, dependence on imported broodstock such as Penaeus vannamei, advantages of indigenous species (Penaeus monodon and Penaeus indicus), and production of alternative species (domestication, SPF monodon broodstock, and farm performance). It is recommended that India must realize the potential of developing the domesticated indicus and monodon broodstock for shrimp production.
